“Every owner/operator is different, from the lanes and ways they want to run, to the support and services they need from us. We take the time to know you as a person, as well as to get familiar with your business needs, background and objectives…” – Lew Battaglia
Welcome Mr. Battaglia, it's nice to have you here at Wheels of Justice HQ. It's not very often that we get the opportunity to interview someone with your trucking credentials. Please tell us a little about yourself and your background in the trucking business...
I have been at the helm of Dworkin for over 10 years. In that time we have made it a strong point to develop strong relationships with owner operators as a primary way to provide customers with the outstanding service they deserve.
We have always felt here at 18 Wheels of Justice that smaller fleets often offer the best jobs for drivers and owner operators. What are some of the best things about working at Dworkin?
We recognize that every owner/operator is different; from the lanes they want to run, to the support and services they need. We take the time to know you as a person, as well as to get familiar with your business needs, background and objectives. From there we will work with you to tailor a personalized program designed to ensure your success. For more information, take a look at the Owner/Operator section on our website www.dworkintrucking.com
How many power units does Dworkin operate? Does your company fleet operate separately from your owner operator fleet?
Dworkin currently has 40 power units, split 50/50 between Company and owner/operators. While we need to operate our Company equipment effectively, owner/operators are every bit as valued and vital to our success, and are never just given “left over” freight or treated like second-class citizens.
How do you make sure that your owner operators are given the opportunity to haul the same freight as company trucks?
Owner operators have equal access to business on every lane we run but, unlike Company drivers, are not forced to run loads they don’t want. While we prefer our owner/operators to stay busy, we understand that it’s their right, as owners of their own trucking businesses, to load when and where they want to.
Dworkin Trucking has been in business a long time, what are some of the keys to your success?
There are no magic formulas but honest effort and sincerity go a long way. We work hard to build quality and long-lasting relationships with all drivers, whether Company or owner/operators, and with trusted vendors and critical business partners.
Are you looking for owner ops and drivers with steel hauling experience only?
While it’s helpful to find drivers who have experience in what we do, we are realistic and realize that steel-hauling is not a specialty many drivers have been exposed to. It helps to have some flatbed experience since that reduces training to load securement. Nonetheless, we have some excellent owner operators who have successfully transitioned from van and other, more common, driving backgrounds. Each person's experience is different and is individually considered.
What type of overall experience does Dworkin require? Is it the same for owner operators as company drivers?
In general we need one or more years of verifiable driving experience from with a currently active CDL-A and indication of a commitment to safety (in other words, you need to have a reasonably strong MVR). For owner operators we believe that prior owner operator experience (at least a year) is also extremely important since that teaches owner operators how to their manage time and expenses in the process of becoming a successful business person
What lanes does Dworkin run?
We are headquartered in Cleveland Ohio and also operate a remote terminal in Middletown Ohio (between Cincinnati and Dayton). Currently the majority of our freight travels within Ohio or goes to/from states immediately surrounding Ohio. However, we have recently added customers that are providing access to new lanes going east (Pennsylvania into New England, but excluding metropolitan New York and New Jersey). Those lanes are providing strong rates and backhaul opportunities. We are very excited by those new options and believe they will help position us for a successful 2014.
What is the typical home time?
Most of our drivers get home at least once during each week and are also home each weekend. With that said, some drivers, by their choice, want to be out more, which we make every effort to accommodate them.
