Jim, first of all, hello and welcome to 18 Wheels of Justice! Secondly, sorry about the smell around the office, (Kit makes me apologize to all of our visitors).
With your impressive background and long history of safely guiding small carriers through difficult safety audits, accidents and regulation changes, small carriers really get the benefit of a strong, experienced safety department with your services. What made you decide to go into business for yourself?
Small carriers often don’t have a budget or the back ground to address their own safety concerns, recognizing this we decided to develop an option for them. To be honest, I was frustrated by the number of small carriers going out of business due to crashes and violations and believed we could help prevent this from happening. The small carriers are who make up the majority of the transportation in this country and they need the same support as the larger carriers. JD and Associates Consulting was formed to make a positive difference in these organizations.
You’re always welcome here at 18 Wheels of Justice if you help small carriers, they just don't have the resources and often get the short end of the stick when it comes to DOT audits and accidents. Do you help with hiring criteria for new drivers? What about safety meetings?
We can help establish hiring criteria and insure the drivers being hire have proven safety backgrounds. Nothing is more important than an ongoing safety program, safety meetings are a large part of a successful effort in this area. We provide material for safety meetings, training for those giving the meetings, and we can provide a speaker if required. The safety meetings we provide are customized to the operation and problems of the carrier.
Establishing solid hiring criteria is so important. Can you help with recruiting? It's hard for an owner to make sure the trucks are loaded, take care of customers, accounting, maintenance, etc. and recruit.
All carriers suffer the same problems with these areas, creating a solid plan on how to address these key issues will insure that all efforts are made for success. We will provide hiring criteria; access to marketing and advertising, our staff can assist with accounting and setting up a system that will reduce the time spent in this area and insure all financials are being properly tracked. We can provide maintenance and operations assistance that will allow the owner to understand their true costs of operation and how to maximize profit in these areas while insuring their resources are being properly utilized.
A lot of small carriers feel they can't afford a consultant and just try and make do. We feel that you can't afford not to have someone like you. Your company is designed to set up programs that work, not to ring up consulting fees. How are you different than most consulting companies?
The programs we use are developed by practicing managers. These programs are proven to produce results so instead of just ringing up consulting fees we provide the solutions in a manner and format that the owners can use right away. We charge a reasonable rate for our services, we started this business knowing that we would be helping small operators that could not afford to pay large amounts in fees but needed to have the opportunity to survive this environment and still remain independent. It is for this reason we offer such a wide array of services and do so with several options.
We get a lot of requests from small carriers who want to set up a small training program for drivers with no experience. They are usually someone they know, but just don't have any experience. Can small carriers have an effective training program?
When creating training programs for inexperienced drivers the owner must be patient. At this point it is about the training and safety and not profit. The profit will come later. We can provide a program that is detailed and will create quality drivers providing the owners are willing to take the time to let the program work.
You really hit on some strong points, and I can see how JD & Associates can be become a right hand for small fleet owners. Successful Recruiting & Retention truly takes a program, and as much as I hate to use four letter words in our articles, especially this word, it does indeed take “work”.
