Welcome, Welcome, Welcome… We have a very exciting article planned for you today; we take you on an insider’s tour of the secretive and fascinating world of show business.
Let’s talk about Show Business for a minute. I have often heard that “there is no business like show business”, I wanted to find out if this was actually true. When I took my online investigative trucking journalism for dummies class, the virtual professor told me to always have two sources for my stories. So I always use Kit (for new readers, Kit’s my bold and brassy assistant) and The Google.
I tracked down Kit at the local nail shop next door (where she usually goes when she has her “headaches”) and I asked her, “Is it really true that there’s no business like show business?” She rolled her eyes and said she felt her headache coming back and suggested I try The Google. So, I turned to the more emotionally stable Google and simply typed in the question... Is there any business like show business?
The whole first page returned 10 websites that stated clearly. "There’s no business like show business". Right there on the Google! Amazing! Now, Show Business is interesting enough, but what about the trucks that haul all the stage equipment for Bands, Plays, Musicals, Movies, and Broadway Shows all around the country? And they need a few more owner operators? Let’s check this company out!

The Inside Story – Clark Transfer
In the highly specialized world of show business transportation and logistics, Clark Transfer set the standard.
Since pioneering over-the-road transportation of theatrical equipment and productions in North America in 1949, Clark has built and maintained a reputation for unparalleled reliability and quality of service. The people of Clark Transfer have moved equipment, sets, props, costumes and musical instruments for countless Broadway shows, touring theatrical productions, ballet and opera companies, symphony orchestras, popular musical acts and variety shows, large-scale special events and spectacles, political and trade conventions, corporate road shows, television and movies, even circuses.
When Clark Transfer was born, getting the show on the road was a new idea. There were no interstate highways; America relied on the railways — and the railways had limited reach — so first-class live entertainment could only be found in the major cities. Clark Transfer helped to change all that, bringing the performing arts to America’s heartland. For us, “Let’s Get the Show on the Road” is much more than a slogan. It’s a way of life at Clark…

We are thrilled to have Clark Transfer’s owner and president, Ms. Norma Deull with us today to discuss Clark Transfer and their exciting Owner Operator program.
Welcome Ms. Deull and thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. We want to know more about Clark!
What is your background and how long have you been with such a great company like Clark?
Thank you for inviting me. In 1949, my dad invented the concept of moving theater and stage equipment on trucks! Previously all the equipment was hauled on the railroad. He convinced the industry that trucks were the way to reach a much larger audience across the country and allowed shows to be performed in cities without direct rail service.
He was granted the only interstate authority to haul theater and stage equipment by the ICC. I have been at Clark since 1981 and have sons and grandchildren in the business.
That’s amazing. I noticed you have all of your owner operator biographies on your web page. It says a lot about Clark that both you and your customers know so much about your operators. What made you think of this and how do your customers like it?
This is a family owned and operated company and that’s how we do things around here. We have Owner Operators that have been part of this family for decades. Clark Owner Operators are very special people. They do what it takes to get the curtain to go up – on time, every time – and our customers know it.
The bright lights, the fame, the fortune, the "show must go on" attitude, I imagine you only hire the best owner operators in the business. What do you look for in an owner operator?
It isn’t glamorous. It is the “greasy underbelly” of show business. But for the right person, it is a great adventure. First, they must be hard wired to be on time! The Show Must Go On! We expect them to be honest and communicate well. Patience, professionalism, adaptability, and customer service are very important. Our Owner Operators will be interacting with the show production staff throughout the tour and it is important to take good care of our customers.
Clark has been doing this for over 60 years, an amazing accomplishment! What do you attribute the company's success to?
We take good care of our customers and our owner operators! We do what we say we’re going to do and people trust us because of it. Clark does whatever it takes to get the job done. Sometimes that takes really hard work, but we have a great team and we have fun doing it.
What are your hiring areas? What about husband and wife owner operator teams?
We hire in all 48 States. Husband and wife teams are perfect for Clark. When you are doing this type of hauling, there is often a lot of free time while the show is running in a particular city. This is not a high mileage, hard running job, but our owner operators are well compensated, including pay for ALL detention time and a fuel surcharge on all miles, whether bobtail, empty or loaded!
Does the owner operator typically stay with one show for a period of time?
Not always, but often. This is a challenge in recruiting, since we are looking for those special owner operators who like to stay out for weeks or months at a time in various parts of the USA and Canada. We recognize that this is not for everyone, and that the payoff needs to make it worthwhile. Our Owner Operators make good money, but if you talk to any of them you find out that being part of the show is part of the reward.
What type of experience is needed?
Two Years of OTR experience and a good MVR is what we require. All of our loads are NO TOUCH! We don’t require any unique experience, just unique owner operators who do what they say they will do, who can work as part of a team, and who enjoy an insider’s view of Show Business!
Thank you, Ms. Deull... Teams, Husband and Wife Teams, Solos owner operators this a once in a lifetime opportunity to get into show business! Please call Lynn or click on the link to Clark Transfer’s website below!
