Since your inception in 1900, one of Arpin's claims to fame is that your core philosophy has been to treat employees like they’re part of the Arpin family. How Does Arpin put this into practice?
Personal relationships are forged which fosters a great working relationship. From senior executives to clerical staff, everyone knows each other, says “hello”, and treats each other with mutual respect. David and Peter Arpin (owners) will greet and meet drivers to personally thank them for their service. Even though Arpin is a global company, it maintains a family operated atmosphere.
Our operations department is encouraged to know our drivers by name and establish a personal and friendly relationship. Our “modus operandi” is more than just a business relationship.
Here at 18 Wheels of Justice, we admire owners like David and Peter who have a “hands on” approach. A lot of HHG Owner Operators get hurt when moving companies give discounts on moves to get the business. We like your program where Arpin offers Protection from discounts – as the discount goes up so does the owner operator’s linehaul percentage. Can you tell us more about this?
We know that to stay competitive we need to compete with other carriers, and to do that we may need to discount. At certain levels we draw the line and will absorb more as a Van Line in order to protect the driver profitability.
In addition to discount protection it’s our philosophy if a driver is a good packer we will offer them pack work where possible to enhance the driver’s revenue.
What about claims? This is always a huge issue in this business. Most Companies always have ways to protect the customer. What about the Owner Operator? He works hard, does what he is supposed to do and then, he loses money when somebody else scratches Dear Old Aunt Sally's Antique (and, of course, suddenly very expensive) Snuff Box! C'mon Ricardo! What about the working man, the owner operator!
Arpin Van Lines steps in and helps absorb some claims depending on the driver's claim ratio. We step up and will only charge the driver a certain amount and absorb the rest. The better the driver's ratio the more we absorb.
Also, when a driver has a specific issue regarding a potential claims liability he relays to dispatch, we add notes to the shipment file to document the driver’s concern that may help with the claims adjudication process.
